The Swedish wave of speed metal bands has grown significantly in recent years. Tyranex was among the early pioneers, starting back in 2005. However, their debut album “Extermination Has Begun” wouldn’t come until 2011. As of 2023, Tyranex is ready with their fourth album. Tyranex stands out from the crowd due to the vocals of Linnea Landstedt. It’s not often you hear female vocalists in this genre. Thoughts are drawn to Holy Moses and Sabina Classen. But Linnea has a vocal style that is much closer to classic heavy metal than Classen’s. It sounds pretty cool and gives Tyranex a uniqueness that is sorely needed in the genre. Linnea uses a special technique where she transitions from growling to high-pitched screaming in the same sentence. Sometimes from hoarse singing to cleaner vocals of a finer sort. Her vocal range is varied, to say the least. Unfortunately, the music isn’t as unique, and it feels like I’ve heard similar riffing a thousand times before. But one can’t expect new ground to be broken when dabbling in speed metal. Linnea is the sole original member of the band. Both the bassist and guitarist joined last year, so there have been changes since then. But there’s little to complain about regarding that, as it seems the new members know what they’re doing. Some of the songs are actually quite cool, and I notice “Megalomania” which has some very cool riffs.
