The legendary fjord monster is set to terrify bath-loving Norwegians in the fall of 2025.
It’s been nearly a year and a half since we first learned that a Norwegian feature film about the Kraken was in the works. Now, Nordisk Film Distribution has revealed that Sara Khorami and Mikkel Bratt Silset have secured the lead roles, and filming is finally underway in the beautiful Sognefjord.
“It’s great fun to make a monster movie in Norway. The Kraken has appeared in major Hollywood films, but few know that the Kraken is Norwegian,” says producer John Einar Hagen at Nordisk Film.
“Kraken” is directed by Pål Øie and Sjur Aarthun, who also serves as the cinematographer. Although the duo has experience with disasters and eerie atmospheres in films such as “The Tunnel” (2019), “Dark Woods” (2003), and “Dark Woods 2” (2015), “Kraken” marks their first monster movie.
And we’re talking about a monster movie with a capital M. In a press release, Nordisk Film Distribution describes “Kraken” as follows:
“At the bottom of Norway’s deepest fjord rests a mythical monster, an enormous and deadly creature that sailors worldwide have feared for centuries. You might not want to swim in the fjord anytime soon because you’re about to meet the Kraken.
When a village in Sognefjord is struck by mysterious events, marine biologist Johanne Berge is reluctantly sent there to investigate. Strange natural phenomena, peculiar sounds from the deep, and a tragic accident raise suspicion of a dangerous threat lurking in the fjord. As Johanne battles environmental destruction and her own past, she must uncover the truth before the terror from the depths takes over.”
