American band Fer de Lance released an EP in 2020 and are now ready with their debut album, The Hyperborean. The band members come from various other groups—though mostly ones I’m unfamiliar with. The one exception is High Spirit, a band well known among fans of melodic hard rock, where two of Fer de Lance’s members have previously played.
Fer de Lance’s style is epic heavy metal, deeply rooted in Cimmerian themes. The songs are grand and cinematic, emphasized further by added sound effects and atmospheric elements. While their sound is heavily influenced by the 80s, they also incorporate elements from more extreme genres, such as tremolo picking.
Overall, it actually sounds pretty great, and I find it quite charming. If I had to point out one flaw with The Hyperborean, it would be that the vocals can become a bit tiresome over time. But for the most part, this is a solid album.
Released April 22nd, 2022 on Cruz del Sur Music.
