Cruel Force is a German black thrash band that has previously released two albums. These came out in 2010 and 2011, and then the band went silent for over ten years. So now the band is back with their third album. I’m delighted to report that I have truly been charmed by Cruel Force’s new album. At first listen, this may sound like a standard black thrash band. But my, what riffs emerge as you listen further. “Dawn Of The Axe” can be reminiscent of everything from old Sepultura to newer bands like Municipal Waste. However, I’m most captivated by the song “Across The Styx” with its riffs inspired from the East. Thoughts drift to Mercyful Fate’s classic “The Mad Arab.” The whole album isn’t equally exciting, but when the band shines, this is black thrash at its best.
