Mayhemic is not a Mayhem cover band—it’s a blackened thrash metal band from Chile. “Toba” is the band’s debut album. However, the band has previously released a demo, an EP, some singles, and a compilation album that includes the demo, the EP, and the singles. But now things are getting serious, as they present a full album consisting of eight hellish tracks. South American thrash metal is usually quite brutal, and Mayhemic does not disappoint in that regard. Each song is harder than the last, and they blaze by at breakneck speed. I can’t really distinguish one song from another, but that’s not really the point. Even a track called “Olduvai’s Lullaby” speeds along at 200 km/h. That’s how it should be, and the 36 minutes of this album offer little room to breathe. If I have to say something negative about Mayhemic, it’s that there are quite a few bands of this type, and I’ve heard similar bands many times before. But I like Mayhemic’s style, and they play like demons. Credit where it’s due!
