The Greek thrash metal band Suicidal Angels has been going strong since 2001 and is now ready with their eighth album. Not bad. Their new album is called “Profane Prayer” and consists of new school thrash metal. Despite their long history and many albums, I’ve never quite fallen for this band. Not because they’ve been bad, but I’ve listened to them and then just moved on and forgotten about them. The only time they’ve been in Norway was when they were the opening band for Kreator at Betong in Oslo in 2010, so that probably plays a part too.
Now, as I’m about to review the album, I give it several spins. It certainly helps because the album grows on me with each listen. It takes some time to appreciate the album, as it’s a bit too polished and overproduced for my taste. I really have to give it many chances because there’s a lot of good music here. Good riffs, solid drums, and great songs. The vocals are probably the most overproduced, but vocalist Nick Melissourgos certainly knows his craft. Although I might have preferred vocals that were a bit more authentic and not layered so much in the studio. But the more I listen to Suicidal Angels’ thrash metal, the more I like it. I realize I need to go back in the band’s catalog and listen more to their previous albums. Perhaps it’s time for the band to pay a visit to Norway again, after all, it’s been fourteen years since the last time.
Release March 1st, 2024 on Nuclear Blast.
