The Mist are an old Brazilian thrash metal band with roots going back to 1986, when they performed under the name Mayhem. Yes—one of many Mayhems in the ’80s, which is why Norway’s own Mayhem began styling themselves “The True Mayhem” to stand out. The Brazilian Mayhem kept the name until 1989, when they switched to The Mist and released their debut album, “Phantasmagoria”. Two more albums followed in the ’90s before the band split in 1997. Many years later they reunited, and in 2022 they put out an EP—by then with only Vladimir Korg remaining from the original line-up. Now The Mist return with a new full-length that takes them back to their thrash roots.
It’s a little sad when a band reunites with just one original member, but Korg has at least assembled strong players who are active in several other groups. “The Dark Side of the Soul” sounds resolutely old-school: strong riffs, solid production, and a fine balance between melody and aggression. If this were a brand-new band, I might note that they don’t bring much that’s new to the table, but given The Mist’s long history it feels like a virtue that they’re sticking to their style. All told, this is a genuinely good comeback record, even if only one man remains from the classic line-up.
Released November 7th, 2025 on Alma Mater Records.
