Violent Sin hails from Belgium, and “Serpent’s Call” is the band’s debut album. We’re talking about dirty, fast-paced speed metal here. It races along at a high tempo, and the vocalist lets out primal screams left and right. The experience of “Serpent’s Call” is chaotic and messy. There are plenty of riffs crammed into a short space of time, and there’s screaming and howling at every opportunity. The production appears to be done by amateurs, with a heavy dose of reverb and echo on all the instruments and vocals. As a result, the sound gets lost in an unpleasant and exaggerated resonance. The Belgians deserve credit for bringing a certain charm, but it’s not enough to save this release. But if you like your metal lo-fi, it might be worth checking out.
