Washington, D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that all federal funding will be cut for colleges, universities, and schools that permit what he describes as “illegal protests.” The statement was made in a post on Truth Social on Tuesday afternoon.
“Provocateurs will either be jailed or permanently sent back to the country they came from. American students will be permanently expelled or, depending on the crime, arrested. NO MASKS!” Trump wrote.
It remains unclear what the president means by “illegal protests” or whether such a decision is legally enforceable.
Under the U.S. Constitution, political demonstrations are protected as free speech, provided they remain peaceful.
The latest move raises questions about the state of democracy in the country, as the right to protest has long been a fundamental part of American society. So much for “The land of the free.”
