Kolben Kulturhus, the cultural centre in Kolbotn and home to events including Hellbotn Metalfest, is renaming its Hall 4 after Gylve “Fenriz” Nagell of Darkthrone.
The smaller hall, which overlooks Kolbotn Lake, has long been used by the local metal community and has played an important role during Hellbotn Metalfest. Few people have had a greater impact on both the local scene in Kolbotn and the international metal community than Fenriz, one half of Norwegian black metal pioneers Darkthrone. From autumn 2026, Hall 4 will therefore be known simply as Fenriz.
The name change is part of a wider renaming of the three performance halls at Kolben. After more than 20 years as Hall 1, Hall 2 and Hall 4, the venues will receive names reflecting the people, history and culture connected to Kolbotn and the former municipality of Oppegård.
Since Kolben opened in 2006, its halls have hosted a wide variety of cultural events, including concerts, theatre, lectures, stand-up comedy and other performances. The cultural centre now wants to give the venues a stronger local identity by naming them after prominent figures with ties to the area.
Hall 1 will become Amundsen, named after world-famous polar explorer Roald Amundsen. Amundsen had strong ties to the former municipality of Oppegård through his home Uranienborg at Svartskog.
Hall 2 will be renamed Radka in honour of acclaimed Norwegian jazz singer Radka Toneff, who grew up in Kolbotn and became one of the most distinctive voices in Norwegian jazz. The hall has also been closely associated with Kullebunden Jazz, which has been responsible for much of its activity over the years.
Hall 4, meanwhile, has developed a particularly strong connection to metal and extreme music. The intimate venue has become a natural gathering place for the local metal scene and for Hellbotn Metalfest where the festival started in 2014, making Fenriz a fitting choice for its new name.
From autumn 2026, visitors to Kolben will therefore be able to attend concerts in Amundsen, hear jazz in Radka or seek out the heavier sounds of Fenriz.
The new names will be officially introduced during three anniversary events in autumn 2026:
