China isn’t exactly known for its horror films, but it has produced a few cult hits over the years—Bio Zombie being one of them.
Most of the action takes place inside a shopping mall, which naturally brings to mind George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead. However, this film leans much more into comedy. Mix in some Braindead with a dash of Karate Kid, and you’re getting close to what this movie delivers. It features a good amount of humour and a fair share of gore.
The cast of experienced Hong Kong actors brings energy and personality to their roles, helping to elevate the film. Still, it doesn’t quite reach greatness. At times, the direction falters, and while there are moments of brilliant detail, the pacing drags in parts and the story lacks urgency. That said, it’s a fun ride—and if you enjoy your zombie flicks with a heavy dose of humour, Bio Zombie might be right up your alley.
