Blackning comes from Brazil and has released two albums before. Their first album was released back in 2014, and the next one in 2016, so it’s been a while since their last album. Perhaps not surprising since the band changed both bassist and guitarist in 2017. These things can take a bit of time when half the band is replaced. Anyway, the thrash band is back now and offers ten songs filled with aggression and energy. The first thing I notice is that the sound is distorted in several places, giving that annoying sound often referred to as “clipping.” It’s very strange that they didn’t catch this during mixing, and I hope it’s just an issue with the MP3 files I received.
The music is decent thrash metal. It doesn’t stand out from other thrash bands in the same style, for better or worse. The band has some good riffs here and there. The vocals are a bit too dull and monotonous. However, the band deserves credit for some good guitar work. All in all, “Awakening Rage” is unlikely to garner much attention since this is music that has already been made a thousand times before, and often better.
