Trey Parker and Matt Stone are voicing their frustration over the delay of South Park Season 27, blaming the ongoing Paramount-Skydance merger for interfering with the show’s release.
In a blunt statement posted to the show’s social media shortly after Comedy Central announced a two-week delay, the creators said:
“This merger is a shitshow and it’s fucking up South Park. We are at the studio working on new episodes and we hope the fans get to see them somehow.”
The new season is now set to premiere on July 23 instead of the originally planned July 9. Season 26 aired over two years ago with only six episodes, followed by three specials between late 2023 and early 2024.
While Parker and Stone didn’t elaborate on how the merger has disrupted production, Paramount has faced multiple scheduling issues, layoffs, and cancellations as it finalises its deal with Skydance, which is still pending FCC approval ahead of a July 7 deadline.
Adding to the chaos is an unresolved legal dispute over South Park’s streaming rights, as the previous deal with HBO Max expired in June. According to Variety, Parker and Stone allege that incoming Paramount president Jeff Shell has interfered in ongoing talks with Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix.
