Mayhem’s Charles “Ghul” Hedger Joins as Replacement
In a candid statement posted to their official Facebook page, Norwegian The Kovenant have announced the departure of longtime guitarist Astennu due to escalating internal conflicts and personal struggles.
While fans have recently seen a band bursting with energy on stage, the reality behind the scenes has been far less harmonious. The band reveals that Astennu’s “personal demons” and “increasingly erratic” behaviour have significantly disrupted not only live performances but also the integrity and morale of the group as a whole.
“We did everything we could to support him,” the band wrote. “However, his repeated breaches of our agreements—including sobriety on tour, treating fellow bandmates and crew with respect, and honoring the band’s goals—left us with no other option.”
The statement makes clear that the decision was not taken lightly. Despite numerous efforts to resolve matters privately, tensions reached a breaking point. The Kovenant emphasised that their priority is to move forward with professionalism and passion—values they feel have been compromised in recent times.
In the wake of Astennu’s departure, The Kovenant have unveiled their new guitarist: Charles Hedger, better known to black metal fans as Ghul of Mayhem. Hedger brings with him a wealth of experience and a reputation for precision and intensity—qualities The Kovenant hope will restore stability and drive as they enter their next chapter.
“Charles is an experienced and highly respected musician who understands our vision and energy,” they wrote. “We’re confident that he will fit seamlessly into the band and help shape this next chapter with integrity and artistry.”
While the news may come as a surprise to some fans, the band expressed confidence that this change will ultimately serve their artistic goals and uphold the legacy they’ve built since their genre-shifting days as Covenant.
The Kovenant closed the statement with a reaffirmed commitment to their music and audience:
“Our commitment to The Kovenant’s future and the music we make remains unwavering.”
