The death metal veterans in Sarkasm first formed all the way back in 1990 in Canada. They released four demos up until 1994 before the band disbanded. Over the years, they reunited sporadically for live shows, but in 2023, this finally led to something more substantial—the release of their debut album, As Empires Decay. Considering it took them 33 years to put out a debut, it’s impressive that the follow-up, Carnival of Atrocities, has arrived just two years later.
Even more surprising is the fact that all five original members from the ’90s are still in the band. So, while they haven’t been particularly active, at least they’ve managed to keep the lineup intact. That being said, Sarkasm isn’t the most exciting band out there. This is classic death metal, somewhat reminiscent of a more thrash-influenced version of Bolt Thrower. However, they have plenty of solid riffs, and the overall sound is strong. Bruno Bernier’s vocals could use more variation, but otherwise, Sarkasm has delivered a solid album.
Released February 4th, 2025 on Xtreem Music.
