Boycotting products from countries involved in negative actions, such as violating human rights or engaging in warfare, is a common tactic to pressure nations by weakening their economies. Russia is a prime example of this, following its invasion of Ukraine.
What is more unusual, however, is that the United States is now facing a massive boycott of its products—initiated by its own allies. The reason behind this is, of course, Trump’s policies and everything that comes with them.
Canada was among the first to start boycotting American products, with many consumers and companies taking action as early as the beginning of February.
Now, Europe is following suit, with many companies, businesses, and consumers saying no to American products. Tesla was one of the first to be affected after Elon Musk made a Nazi salute at Donald Trump’s inauguration. This resulted in a 45% decline in Tesla sales compared to last year in some European countries. Several websites have even compiled guides on alternative products to replace American goods.
In addition to this, there are also campaigns in the U.S. directly targeting companies that have aligned themselves with Trump’s policies.
In Europe, the boycotts that have started to spread are generally tied to Trump’s policies as well. In Denmark, where many are outraged by Trump’s comments about Greenland, a Facebook group called Boikott amerikanske varer (Boycott American Goods) has gained over 36,000 members. In Sweden, at least 5,000 people have joined a group called Bojkotta varor från USA (Boycott Goods from the USA).
Not only that, but even many Americans themselves are participating in the boycott of American products. A grassroots movement called The People’s Union USA has declared a 24-hour boycott of major American retail chains, lasting the entire Friday. The boycott is described by the movement as economic resistance against how American billionaires, corporations, and politicians treat the population.
After Friday’s scandal—where Donald Trump and JD Vance clashed with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and refused future support—the boycott appears to be escalating. Many countries that previously considered the U.S. a friend and strong ally have now lost trust in America, believing it is no longer a reliable partner as long as Trump remains in power.
