Microsoft has announced it will discontinue Skype, the once-dominant internet calling service, in May. Users will be able to log in to Microsoft Teams’ free tier instead.
Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion and integrated it into products like Office and Windows Phone. However, Skype has struggled to compete with platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, and WhatsApp, while Microsoft has focused on expanding Teams.
Launched in 2003, Skype revolutionized global communication by offering free calls. It changed hands multiple times, with eBay purchasing it in 2005 before Microsoft’s acquisition.
Microsoft praised Skype’s role in shaping modern communication but is now shifting resources toward Teams.
