The cult-classic rock film This Is Spinal Tap (1984) is officially getting a long-awaited sequel. Spinal Tap II: The End Continues will hit cinemas on 12 September 2025, according to Variety.
In a newly released teaser, fans are treated to a nostalgic moment as the band’s signature Marshall guitar amplifier is cranked “up to 11″—a nod to one of the original film’s most iconic scenes, in which guitarist Nigel Tufnel explains that his amps go beyond the standard 10.
Original Director and Cast Return
Rob Reiner, who directed the original, is back in the director’s chair and reprises his role as documentary filmmaker Marty DiBergi. Meanwhile, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer return as members of “one of England’s loudest bands.”
“I’m so thrilled to work with the team at Bleecker Street, who are passionate about keeping Tap’s legacy alive. And I’m happy to give Marty DiBergi another shot at relevance,” said Reiner in a statement.
Star-Studded Guest Appearances
In the sequel, the fictional heavy metal group reunites after a 15-year hiatus for one final concert. Adding to the excitement, music legends such as Elton John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood are set to make guest appearances.
Re-Release of the Original Film
Bleecker Street has acquired the rights to both the sequel and the original film, which has been fully restored and will return to cinemas this summer before becoming available on digital platforms for the first time in years.
Originally released in 1984, This Is Spinal Tap was selected for preservation by the U.S. Library of Congress in 2002 for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.
New Book to Accompany the Film
Alongside the film’s release, a new book titled A Fine Line Between Stupid and Clever: The Story of Spinal Tap—a reference to one of the original film’s most famous quotes—will also be published.
