As most names have been taken, and the number of bands with the same name is growing, one must be creative in composing words to come up with new names. Hence, strange names like Glacier Eater appear. What on earth is a glacier eater? I have no idea. But I’ve heard worse names. Glacier Eater hails from Oakland, USA, and released their debut album “Glacier Eater” in 2015. Now, the band is releasing their follow-up, “Tempest,” on their own label, which they’ve named Glacier Recordings. The band’s style can be described as melodic thrash metal. Thoughts may drift towards Swedish bands like At the Gates, but this is more thrash and more in the hardcore realm. Vocalist Ryan Hansen, in particular, has a hardcore approach in his use of his voice. It’s this vocal style that I like the least about “Tempest.” The words are shouted out, and it becomes quite tiring to listen to over time. The vocals become very monotonous as they always stay in the same pitch. Some of the melodic instrumental parts contrast with the vocals, which, in my opinion, don’t quite work. So, even though Glacier Eater has some good music to offer, the album falls a bit short and ends up somewhat in the middle of the road.
Released by Glacier Recordings on October 27th, 2023.
