Them, formerly a German King Diamond tribute band, have been at it for several years now. The fact they once paid tribute to King Diamond tells you most of what you need to know about their style: like the Danish king himself, Them make concept albums within heavy metal. As I understand it, the lyrics on “Psychedelic Enigma” continue a narrative from earlier records. The previous album was a straight ’80s homage. This time they seem to be back in the present day—though it’s hard to say, as the promo I received didn’t include the lyrics.
Musically there’s a shift. On the last record they leaned into ’80s clichés—synths and the like—which was a bit of fun. Now they sound far more like a power metal band: fast double-bass drumming and clean, polished vocals. It doesn’t quite suit the horror stories they’re telling. It’s still good, and Them remain a cool band for fans of classic heavy metal—and now power metal—to check out. But I do prefer a couple of the earlier albums.
Released October 24th, 2025 on Steamhammer.
