Witch Blade is a Swedish heavy metal band clearly inspired by the early 80s British scene. The somewhat unique twist here is that they sing in Swedish. I’m not entirely sure how well it works. On one hand, I appreciate that the band is doing something different and thus establishing its own identity. On the other hand, it sounds a bit like Swedish folk music, and not necessarily the good kind. The band actually started way back in 2012 and released an album in 2015 that went unnoticed by most people. The Swedish vocals aren’t the only thing that’s hard to digest about “Månsken” – the weak production is also difficult to like. I would imagine that the weak production is intentional to sound like the lesser-known bands from the NWOBHM scene – at least to some extent. I do like some of the songs, and especially the title track “Månsken” has good melodies and is catchy. But overall, the album doesn’t quite hit the mark.
Released October 21st, 2022 on Dying Victims Productions.
