There are quite a few bands called Anubis. Just on Metal Archives, I count a total of twelve bands with this name. But here we are talking about a band from the USA, more specifically Los Angeles. However, Anubis doesn’t sound like something you usually find within metal and hard rock from Los Angeles. Anubis plays a blend of German-style power metal and thrash metal. Anubis has previously released four EPs, so “Dark Paradise” is the band’s debut album. They have also put a lot of effort into the release. The album is well-produced, the playing is good, and even the cover is beautifully executed. I was a bit skeptical of the power metal vocals at first, but the more I listen to them, the more I like them. They are powerful without overdoing the melodic vocal lines. The same goes for the album as a whole. There are many thrash riffs dominating the guitar work. The fact that the band covers Death’s “Symbolic” says something as well. It’s a pretty cool cover too. It’s done in their own style with their power and thrash metal expression, and it’s a bit faster than the original. That song becomes the album’s biggest “wow,” but the album delivers well all the way through. So if you want dark-themed power metal, Anubis is worth checking out.
