RED ONE is the latest blockbuster action film starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Chris Evans, J.K. Simmons, and Norway’s own Kristofer Hivju. With a budget of $250 million, the movie boasts impressive special effects and CGI. However, production faced challenges, with rumors of delays caused by The Rock arriving late to filming.
The story takes place the day before Christmas, when Santa Claus (Red One) is kidnapped. Callum Drift (Dwayne Johnson), Santa’s bodyguard, and Jack O’Malley (Chris Evans), a bounty hunter and master hacker, must save him before Christmas morning. Armed with gadgets and skills, the duo embarks on a global mission spanning Aruba, the North Pole, and mythical realms filled with trolls, talking polar bears, and headless horsemen. They way they have included all those mythical creatures is pretty fun.
Though action-packed and visually rich, RED ONE carries heartwarming messages about family, redemption, and seeing the good in people. Jack’s journey from absentee father to a more present and caring parent adds emotional depth. The film also emphasizes the spirit of Christmas: spreading joy and embracing second chances.
While the movie leans more toward action than traditional holiday themes, it does capture festive elements through its visuals, music, and setting. The North Pole shines with colorful lights and bustling activity, accompanied by classic Christmas songs like Santa Claus is Coming to Town. Despite some overuse of special effects, the film delivers moments of visual splendor.
In the end, RED ONE is a fun, if not groundbreaking, holiday action film. It might not become a yearly classic, but it’s worth a watch for fans of festive adventure and over-the-top action. At least I had a great time watching the movie. It’s fun, it’s festive, and filled with cool action.
