Swedish thrashers Defiatory are back with their third album, delivering a sound that can best be described as melodic thrash metal. The band also incorporates elements of death metal, and some of the melodic sections bring to mind bands like Arch Enemy, At The Gates, and other Swedish acts.
There’s something about Defiatory’s sound that unmistakably feels Swedish, particularly in the melodic guitar work. However, the vocals are the band’s weakest point. Vocalist Martin Runnzell sounds more like he’s shouting rather than growling or singing—or whatever he’s attempting. It’s not terrible, but it’s not particularly good either.
Apart from that, Apokalyps delivers decent melodic thrash metal. Nothing groundbreaking, but solid enough for fans of the genre.
Released June 3rd, 2022 on Black Lion Records.
