Man Machine Industry is the solo project of Swedish musician Jhonny “Berget” Bergman. Having played in bands such as Reignsaw, Rosicrucian, and Slapdash, he has contributed to several albums over the years, building a solid background in heavy and thrash metal. Now, he is back with a new release under his solo banner, delivering a thrashy heavy metal EP running 24 minutes.
This latest effort, Eschaton I. Reckoning Day, is the first of three planned EPs. While the production is polished and the musicianship is solid, the overall result feels somewhat unremarkable. The EP maintains a steady intensity throughout, with powerful riffing and a rhythmic drive that keeps the energy up. However, it never quite reaches a level that makes it stand out in an already crowded genre.
One of the defining aspects of the sound is the incorporation of modern groove metal elements, which, for me, don’t quite hit the mark. While the combination of thrash and groove metal can often work well, in this case, it feels somewhat forced, lacking a natural flow. The songwriting is competent but doesn’t bring anything particularly new or fresh to the table.
Ultimately, Eschaton I. Reckoning Day is a decent listen for fans of thrash-infused heavy metal, but it struggles to establish a distinct identity. While Bergman clearly has the skills and experience, the EP feels more like a standard offering rather than something that leaves a lasting impression. It remains to be seen whether the next two EPs in the series will bring more originality and refinement to the project.
