Gauntlet Rule is a heavy metal band formed in 2019, and The Plague Court marks their debut album. Although the band is pretty new, all three members have long been part of the Swedish metal scene. Guitarist Rogga Johansson, in particular, is known for his staggering number of active bands—currently 41—alongside at least 18 former projects. Among them, the most notable is the American band Massacre, which he joined in 2020.
Gauntlet Rule delivers traditional heavy metal with an epic touch. Blaze Bayley makes a guest appearance on Dying for My Dreams, yet the band doesn’t lean heavily into an Iron Maiden sound. Instead, they’ve managed to carve out their own style while remaining firmly rooted in classic metal. Lorraine Gill from the obscure band Taist of Iron, which released albums in 1984 and 2017, also lends her vocals on A Choir of Angels.
Overall, Gauntlet Rule offers solid, well-executed heavy metal. While it may not be groundbreaking, it’s an enjoyable listen with a handful of strong tracks.
Released March 18th, 2022 on Target Records.
