It’s by no means just unknown members behind the name Cassius King if you’re somewhat familiar with metal. I can mention bands like Overkill, Spastic Ink, Watchtower, Hades, Patriarchs in Black, Dangerous Toys, and Whiplash. However, Cassius King is not like any of the mentioned bands – not even close. Cassius King plays stoner metal with a dash of heavy metal. The band originally started as the solo project of Dan Lorenzo. He released a solo album in 2004 called “Cassius King” and named this band after that record. Three members of Cassius King also play in Dan Lorenzo’s solo band. Enough about that – let’s move on to what “Dread The Dawn” has to offer. So, here we’re talking about stoner metal clearly inspired by southern rock and heavy metal. Heavy music with a lot of blues in the riffs. Vocalist Jason McMaster often leans towards the heavy metal genre with his powerful voice and is also the band’s strongest asset. The instrumental part is so typical for the genre that it doesn’t add much – but the blend of Jason McMaster’s voice and the music makes Cassius King interesting. He has a good voice that elevates “Dread The Dawn” to be more than just another stoner album. The truly great songs are missing. But “Dread The Dawn” is still a good and well-executed album.
Released October 21st, 2022 on MDD Records.
