Hexecutor is a French thrash metal band that has been active since 2011. …Where Spirit Withers in Its Flesh Constraint is the band’s third album.
Let’s start with the positives. I appreciate how the band blends different genres into their music. While they are firmly rooted in thrash metal, they incorporate elements of black metal and a strong dose of heavy metal. When the band fully embraces heavy metal in certain instrumental sections, they sound absolutely fierce.
The melodic guitar work by Jey Deflagratör and newcomer Ricky Malevolent is beautifully executed. I also enjoy the drumming and its overall sound, which at times is reminiscent of Igor Cavalera. The toms, in particular, are mixed prominently, creating a powerful presence in the soundscape.
What I like less are the French lyrics on most of the songs. The band deserves credit for doing something unconventional, but I don’t think the French language fits the music particularly well. It’s a shame because Hexecutor has a lot to offer otherwise. The songwriting could also be stronger—the band isn’t quite there yet.
That said, I have to give credit for the incredibly striking album cover, painted by John Whiplash.
Release March 28th, 2025 on Dying Victims Productions.
