Norway’s longest-running metal pub, Rock In, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The pub was founded in 2000 in Storgata, Oslo, by drummer Willy Bendiksen and his wife, Beate. Over the years, it has hosted concerts by bands such as Testament, U.D.O., In Flames, Carpathian Forest, and many more.
Former owner Erman Atabay abruptly stepped down from his position following disagreements with the new owners. In response, several staff members have resigned in support of Atabay, including bar manager Kristian Larsen.
The situation escalated on Friday, February 28, when Erman and Kristian celebrated their 20 and 15 years working at the bar. The following day, Rock In’s Facebook page changed its profile picture and banner to black without any explanation.
On Sunday, March 2, Atabay announced that he was withdrawing from Rock In following a legal settlement related to a dispute over ownership of the business. However, he did not elaborate on the details of the conflict.
Rock In’s long-time customers reacted strongly on social media, with many declaring they would stop visiting the pub without Erman and the other familiar staff members behind the bar. Speculation has also arisen over whether the pub might shut down entirely, with former employees expressing frustration on Rock In’s Facebook page.
A person named Maryam Hashemi, who appears to be one of the new owners, addressed concerns in the comments, stating:
“Rock In is not closing – we will continue as before!
To all our guests and friends: Rock In will not close, we will continue to exist and operate as usual! Even though some new people have joined, the operation will continue as before, with the same atmosphere and great experiences. The opening hours will remain the same, and our wonderful staff will continue to be a part of the place.
We look forward to seeing you all – welcome to stop by!”
Despite this statement, skepticism among customers remains high, and the future of Rock In is still uncertain.
