If you’ve been waiting for a film that channels the spirit of silent-era slapstick and mixes it with sheer absurdity, Hundreds of Beavers is here to oblige. Directed by Mike Cheslik and co-written with star Ryland Brickson Cole Tews, this 2022 indie hit is making the leap (or should we say retro leap?) to VHS, courtesy of Witter Entertainment.
The film follows Jean Kayak, a drunken applejack salesman stranded in a surreal, snow-covered wilderness in the early 1800s. As he stumbles his way through nature’s harsh elements and a variety of woodland creatures (portrayed by actors in oversized mascot costumes), Kayak crafts elaborate traps to survive—and, more importantly, to win the heart of a mischievous love interest. But when he discovers that the beavers have formed their own underground society, his quest takes an even wilder turn.
Presented in black-and-white, Hundreds of Beavers leans into its physical comedy roots, evoking classic silent-era antics while delivering a distinctly modern and bizarre sensibility. Think Buster Keaton meets Looney Tunes, with a dash of The Revenant—if The Revenant were completely unhinged.
The VHS release, available for pre-order now, arrives in a slipcase featuring artwork by Kyle Hilton for $28. Collectors can also opt for a yellow VHS variant, limited to just 100 copies, for $34. Each tape includes a VFX breakdown as a special feature, and the film is presented in letterbox format, per the director’s wishes.
Shipping in April, Hundreds of Beavers is ready to take its rightful place in your collection—whether you plan to watch it on an actual VCR or simply admire it on your shelf as a nostalgic conversation starter. Either way, this is one wild ride worth taking.
The VHS can be bought here.
